Job Summary:
The Youth Orchestra Conductor is responsible for the artistic leadership and recruitment of the Adrian Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) ensemble(s), conducting the ensemble(s) weekly rehearsals and a minimum of two concerts each season. Rehearsals, concerts and other fundraising events and activities are generally scheduled on weekends to avoid school conflicts. The Youth Orchestra Conductor serves as the primary communication link between the ASO board and staff and ASYO students and parents and will assist in maintaining a positive relationship.
Essential Functions:
- Determine season repertoire for the ASYO.
- Plan, rehearse, and conduct rehearsals and performances of the youth orchestra.
- Conduct auditions, as necessary, select all playing personnel of the youth orchestra and determine seating within each section of the orchestra.
- Select and hire coaches as needed, as well as additional musicians for performances as needed in alignment with the budget.
- Develop and implement a recruitment program with ASO staff in the local community including area schools and their music instructors. Work with ASO staff to develop marketing and recruitment materials, website, registration forms and policies and procedures.
- Maintain effective communication with ASYO members, parents, coaches, and staff including communicating rehearsal notes.
- Determine instrumentation and determine and procure equipment and library needs for the season. Bow parts and distribute music to ASYO members.
- Assist in fundraising efforts, develop positive relationships with local musicians, music/arts organizations, patrons and potential patrons with the intention to increase the exposure, opportunities and funding of the ASYO program.
- Assist the ASO Conductor and Executive Director in playing a visible and active role in the community; help develop the overall public image of the orchestra in the community and beyond. Speak publicly when called upon to do so as an advocate for the ASYO and provide leadership in the arts community as related to music education for youth.
- Meet with the ASO Conductor, Executive Director and staff to coordinate ASYO events, policies and artistic director of the youth orchestra.
- Continue the development and enhancement of personal musical skills.
- Adhere to all relevant personnel and budgetary policies established by the Executive Director and/or ASO Board of Directors.

Education/Certification/Licensing/Experience Requirements:
- Previous similar leadership and youth orchestra experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in educational or youth orchestra settings (strings educator with the ability to also guide Middle School/High School wind and percussion players preferred).
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Professional work environment in location on the campus of Adrian College.
- Sitting/standing approximately 50% of the time.
- Ability to travel to locations or destinations locally on occasion.
- Attendance expectations: This position requires attendance at all YASO concerts and rehearsals which generally take place in the evenings and on weekends; and attendance as required at ASO meetings.
