Executive Director

Insight HRM is conducting a search for an Executive Director for Jackson Interfaith Shelter.

Job Summary:

The Executive Director is a visionary and collaborative leader committed to assisting the those facing homelessness.  They are responsible to the Board of Directors to ensure that the strategic, operational and organizational objectives are accomplished. They uphold the organization's values while leading and managing JIS according to the direction set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is a champion for the mission of JIS and serves as an inspirational leader, effective advocate, administrator, fundraiser and community leader.

Essential Executive Director Functions:

  1. Collaborates with the JIS Directors and Team Members to lead the strategy and mission of JIS.
  2. Supervise day-to-day operations, oversee strategic direction and program development and management, and design administrative policies and procedures as needed.
  3. Follows applicable policies, laws and guidelines in managing the overall operations of the organization.
  4. Serve as a trusted and effective advocate for the homeless community, being its public face and voice with a dedication to excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  5. Guided by JIS's core values, engage constituents in developing and expanding JIS's programs to build on our community's strengths and to address community needs, and monitor progress towards meeting those needs through evaluation and learning.
  6. Develop and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders and constituents through excellent interpersonal skills, including community members, funders and partner organizations locally, statewide and nationally.
  7. Collaborate with and support the Board of Directors, and prepare reports as needed for the Board of Directors, funders, state/federal authorities and partners.
  8. Supervise and support a dynamic team of staff members and volunteers in a way that promotes their professional growth and ability to effectively carry out the organization's mission.
  9. Serve as a model for staff and volunteers by showcasing excellent organizational, recordkeeping and computer skills, including the management of the organization's computer network and online customer database (CRM).
  10. Oversee financial management and provide leadership in fund development and financial planning by developing and managing organizational and program budgets.
  11. Secure funding through grant writing to diverse funders, the development of special events, the cultivation of donors, and creating innovative business opportunities.
  12. Adapt to changing circumstances and ambiguity with a strong ability and willingness to learn new things, work across diverse areas, and to understand and creatively solve complex problems.
  13. Work simultaneously on multiple ongoing projects.
  14. Works harmoniously with others with exemplary interpersonal skills.
  15. Works on strict deadlines which requires prompt attention to detail and reliable attendance.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

 Education/Certification/Licensing/Experience Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Public Administration, Finance or related field preferred; Master's Degree a plus.
  2. Previous demonstrated experience (preferably 3+ years) in management capacity; previous non-profit industry experience preferred.
  3. Proficient in all MS Office programs and Donor Management Systems.
  4. Previous grant writing experience preferred.
  5. Demonstrated resource development experience.

 Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  1. Involves working in the community and in an open-office environment infrequently exposed to extreme temperature, extreme noise, fumes, dust, etc.
  2. Sitting/standing at desk and on computer periodically.
  3. Ability to travel to locations throughout the region regularly and beyond on occasion.
  4. Ability to lift, carry and transport up to 25 pounds.
  5. No other unusual physical demands or environmental factors.
  6. Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  7. Ability to speak, hear and see.
